M. LeBlanc - Questions

Hi guys,

I was thinking of taking the following questions:

- Chapter 8 page 298 - Questions no. 1 and 2
- Chapter 9 page 335 - Question no. 2

I was hoping to begin working on these this weekend, but I'm not sure if I'll have time. At the very least, I will read the case study, and review some of the course material that pertains to this case.

Maybe we can finalize the questions after Monday's course. Even if some case work gets done, it won't be wasted.

Dirt Bikes USA - Questions

Hi Guys,

This post is to identify the 10 questions we will need to answer as required by our professor for the Dirt Bikes USA Case Study. To begin, please read the background on Dirt Bikes USA.

Chapter 1 page 33, 34 - Questions no. 1, 2 and 4

Dirt Bikes’s management has asked you to prepare a management analysis of the company to help it assess the firm’s current situation and future plans. Review Dirt Bikes’s company history, organization chart, products and services, sales and marketing, and selected financial data in the Introduction to Dirt Bikes, which can be found at the Laudon Web site in the section for Chapter 1. Then prepare a report that addresses these questions:

1. What are the company’s goals and culture?

2. What products and services does Dirt Bikes U.S.A. provide? How many types of products andservices are available to customers? How does Dirt Bikes sell its products?

4. What kinds of information systems and technologies would be the most important for a company such as Dirt Bikes?

Chapter 3 page 107 - Questions no. 4 and 5

Dirt Bikes’s management would like to be sure it is pursuing the right competitive strategy. You have been asked to perform a competitive analysis of the company using the Web to find the information you need. Prepare a report that analyzes Dirt Bikes using the value chain and competitive forces models. Your report should include the following:

4. What are the competitive forces that can affect the industry?

5. What competitive strategy should Dirt Bikes pursue?

Chapter 4 page 141 - Question no. 1

Dirt Bikes’s management believes that the company could benefit from e-commerce. The company has sold motorcycles and parts primarily through authorized dealers. Dirt Bikes advertises in various magazines catering to dirt bike enthusiasts and maintains booths at important off-road motorcycle racing events. You have been asked to explore how Dirt Bikes could benefit from e-commerce and a Dirt Bikes Web site. Prepare a report for management that answers the following questions:

1. How could Dirt Bikes benefit from e-commerce? Should it sell motorcycles or parts over the Web? Should it use its Web site primarily to advertise its products and services? Should it use the Web for customer service?

Chapter 8 page 298 - Questions no. 1 and 2

Dirt Bikes’s management is concerned about how much money is being spent communicating with people inside and outside the company and on obtaining information about developments in the motorcycle industry and the global economy. You have been asked to investigate how Internet tools and technology could be used to help Dirt Bikes employees communicate and obtain information more efficiently. Dirt Bikes provides Internet access to all its employees who use desktop computers.

1. How could the various Internet tools help employees at Dirt Bikes? Create a matrix showing what types of employees and business functions would benefit from using each type of tool and why.

2. How could Dirt Bikes benefit from intranets for its sales and marketing, human resources, and manufacturing and production departments? Select one of these departments and describe the kind of information that could be provided by an intranet for that department. How could this intranet increase efficiency and productivity for that department?

Chapter 9 page 335 - Question no. 2

Some of Dirt Bikes’s suppliers are starting to use radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on their parts and components. Dirt Bikes’s management wants to find out if the company should adopt RFID technology for managing these parts in its warehouses and its finished products. You have been asked to gather some preliminary information on the costs, benefits, and organizational impact for a company such as Dirt Bikes. Your report should answer the following questions:

2. How would using RFID change these business processes? How would RFID provide business value?

Chapter 11 page 409 - Question no. 1

A growing number of Dirt Bikes orders cannot be fulfilled on time because of delays in obtaining some important components and parts for its motorcycles, especially their fuel tanks. Complaints are mounting from distributors who fear losing sales if the dirt bikes they have ordered are delayed too long. Dirt Bikes management has asked you to help it address some of its supply chain issues.

1. Use the Internet to locate alternative suppliers for motorcycle fuel tanks. Identify two or three suppliers. Find out the amount of time and cost to ship a fuel tank (weighing about 5 pounds) by ground (surface delivery) from each supplier to Dirt Bikes in Carbondale, Colorado. Which supplier is most likely to take the shortest amount of time and cost the least to ship the fuel tanks?

I copied these questions from the CD provided with the book. It saved alot of typing :) This will provide us with a good starting point for the project. The professor mentionned a maximum of 26 pages, but I believe anything above 20 will be acceptable. Please review the project conditions.

Cheers!

Project Blog

Hi Kent,
Hi Marcel,

Here's the blog for our DirtBike USA project. We should use it to post comments, discussions, assign responsibilities, etc. A good idea would be to subscribe to the post's atom feed so we'll be alerted to any updates. Otherwise, just visit frequently.

As I had mendionned, I don't have the same book (I'm using Canadian edition). The content is the same, but case studies differ. If possible, I'd like to borrow one of your books (after exam) and photocopy the pages required. I'd return it to your home or office the next day.

This course is advancing rapidly, so we should get working on the project by next weekend.

Let me know what you think.
